Portel is a beautiful village in the district of Evora, seat of the municipality that includes the village of Alqueva. Along this located the Alqueva dam that caused the creation of the largest artificial lake in Europe with approximately 250km2 and almost 1200kms margins.
The town of Portel is located between Evora and Beja IN Alentejo between the plains and the mountains of Portel. The neighboring municipalities of Portel are Évora, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Moura, Vidigueira, Cuba and Viana do Alentejo.
The castle, which stands majestic on top of a hill, was built following the donation of the village by D. Afonso III to João Peres de Aboim in 1261 for services favors, and their friendship and loyalty to the King.
The Castle of Portel, dated century XII, was built in the reign of King John of Aboim.

The Alqueva Dam
The Alqueva Dam is the largest dam in Portugal and the largest artificial lake in Europe, situated on the Guadiana river, in the inner Alentejo, very close to the Spanish border with more than 1,000 km of borders and dozens of islands and islets.
The construction of this large dam aimed to the irrigation throughout the Alentejo, through a strategic water reserve, and the production of electricity, with a view will power irrigation and the provision of other complementary activities.
Currently, the Alqueva dam, the various activities are possible, allowing the approach to nature, leisure and relaxation moments, and also more radical activities and may progress between the various water sports, fishing, hunting, multiple hiking, mountain biking, rental fishing boats, among many others.
